Joan Root still maintains a home on the shores of Lake Naivasha, Kenya, and in Nairobi. She assisted with the photography for David Coulsen's book African Rock Art. Alan Root is receiving his third Lifetime Achievement Award at the Explorers Club Film Festival in New York November 3. Alan remarried and is the father of two sons by Fran Michelmore Root. While he and Joan were known for the first balloon flight over Kilimanjaro, Alan now flies a copter to assist with conservation projects, including Iain Douglas-Hamilton's research on elephants in northern Kenya.
