Adventure Destinations
The
Galapagos This is an excellent destination for teens because there is so
much to do and see, from snorkeling with sea lions to watching blue-footed
boobies and being photographed alongside a giant tortoise. The cruise ships
often have triple bunks in the cabins to accommodate families traveling
together. This vacation also fills in the educational gap on evolution that is
missing or watered down in many high school and college textbooks in the
US.
South
Africas Mala Mala Game Reserve This sophisticated lodge, with very
modern accommodations, has been visited by Susan Sarandon and her son Jack
Robbins, and by Mia Farrow and her children. One reason Mala Mala is so great
for young people is that you are virtually guaranteed to see the so-called Big
Five (elephant, rhino, Cape buffalo, lion, leopard) during a three night stay.
The night game drives, using a spotlight to search for things that go
bump in the night, are way cool.
Zanzibar
One of the islands off the coast of Tanzania was the resort of choice for
Bill Gates and his family for New Years Eve, 1999. Gates is a real fan of
seeing wildlife in its natural habitat, having trekked to see the rare mountain
gorillas, searched for chimps in Tanzanias Mahale
Mountains, cruised the
Amazon, and seen East Africa with paleontologist guide Don Johanson, whose team
found the 3 million year old fossil Lucy in Ethiopia.
The truth is, you need not have that kind of wealth to have the same
focus. Joining a museum or zoological society can make wildlife safaris more
affordable, and bird watching is a relaxing and educational adventure that can
begin in your own backyard or local park.
